Bende stakeholders reject PDP zoning arrangement in Abia – The Sun Nigeria

Ahead of the 2023 governorship in Abia State, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) stakeholders in the Old Bende area rejected the party’s zoning arrangement, which simultaneously handed over the governorship of the state in Abia North and Abia Central, insisting it was Abia North’s turn.
In a stakeholder statement following a meeting on policy developments in the state with respect to Abia North Senatorial Area, held on April 16 at Bordex Court, Abiriba Local Government Area of ‘Ohafia, a stakeholder called the decision to deny Abia North the seat in 2023 an existential threat, said they were determined to ensure Abia’s equity charter is upheld with the return of power to Abia North in 2023.
Part of the statement read, “That we totally reject the zoning arrangements announced by the ruling PDP whereby the governorate of Abia State has been zoned to Abia North and Abia Central simultaneously.
“We reaffirm that it is Abia North’s turn to produce the next Governor of the State by complying with the Equity Charter endorsed by the Founding Fathers of the State.
“How morally offensive and an attempt to create a political crisis in the state, the current efforts of the Ngwa people to retain power after eight years against the spirit and the letters of the equity charter.
“This Abia for the purpose of sharing political offices and other amenities is made up of three areas of Abia North, Abia Central and Abia South. The former Aba division and the former Bende division are not recognized by the 1999 Constitution (as amended) which is currently in force.
“Following from the above, it is Abia North’s turn to produce the next Governor of the State and we urge our brothers and sisters from other areas to uphold the equity charter and support us as we have them. supported in 2007, 2011, 2015. and 2019.
“To realize this legitimate quest of our people, it has been decided that we urge all political parties in Nigeria to choose their candidate for Governor of Abia North if they wish to win Abia State in 2023.
“That no son or daughter of Abia North should accept the post of Deputy Governor from any candidate outside of Abia North and that no son or daughter of Abia North should accept the post of Chief Executive Officer of campaign or manager or coordinator of a gubernatorial candidate outside of Abia North.
“That a mechanism has been set in motion to sanction any son or daughter of Abia North who sabotages the current efforts of stakeholders to induct a Governor of Abia North extraction in 2023.
“That since the stakeholders are cross-party and made up of academics, entrepreneurs, politicians, clergy and other sections of society, they will intensify consultations across the state to ensure that the project comes to fruition.
“Let the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, being a product of equity, refrain from any act that would set the state on fire.
“That the Governor abandon the self-succession agenda of his Ngwa people and toe the line of his predecessors in approving Abia North as the legitimate area to produce the next Governor of the State.”
